Objectives and Policies of TE
Objectives

The objectives of the teaching evaluation exercise are two-fold:
  1. to provide teaching staff with student feedback on the teaching of the subject discipline so that improvement on teaching quality can be made; and

  2. to serve as an indicative assessment of the teaching effectiveness of individual teaching staff.

教學評估計劃的目的有兩方面:一)讓教師得到學生對教學上的回應,從而改善教學素質;二)對個別教師的教學成效作指標性的評估。大學極其重視教學評估計劃,並會認真考慮評估結果。

Policies

At Hong Kong Baptist University, teaching evaluation (TE) exercises have been conducted since 1979 and the following policies were adopted:
  1. All teaching staff, full-time or part-time, substantiated or otherwise, are required to participate in the TE exercises conducted by the University for every course (except Honours Projects, workshops, seminars, tutorials*, laboratory and skill courses (except P.E. skill courses)). (*Upon the request of the School of Business, teaching evaluation is conducted for tutorials/lectures taught by Teaching Assistants, Instructors and RPg students.)

  2. The on-line TE exercise using the Web Teaching Evaluation (WebTE) System was implemented University-wide from the 1999-2000 academic year. At the same time, the implementation of the hard copy evaluation in the classroom was discontinued. (Exception: MBA (China) programmes and local TPg programmes offered by the School of Business. From the 2006-2007 academic year onwards, the School of Business has conducted paper exercise for all its local TPg programmes, but the results will be uploaded into the WebTE System for generation of reports.)

  3. The TE exercise is conducted during the last two to three weeks of classes for a period of two weeks. Teaching staff who are involved in the earlier part of team-teaching and assessed under a separate evaluation can opt for an earlier evaluation. This early bird TE is presently available to most courses, except those with shorter duration and irregular teaching modes.

  4. The TE results would be released on-line after receipt of all course grades by the Academic Registry. The results would be disseminated to individual teaching staff concerned, Heads of Departments/Programmes and Deans/Academy Director for follow-up action, the Personnel Office for re-appointment/promotion consideration and the Quality Assurance Committee for monitoring purposes.

  5. Teaching staff can provide additional information on student comments/responses secured in the TE exercise at the Staff Input Column within two weeks after the release of TE results, and their input would be filed as part of the formal record. There are two staff input columns: one to University/Head/Dean/Academy Director and another to Students. Staff input would be made available to the Deans/Academy Director and Heads of Departments/Programmes together with the TE results. The staff input to students will be sent to all students enrolled in the course via e-mail after the staff input period.
